Meditations by Revd Johanna Smart.

A series of meditations taken from the Book of Ruth and written from Naomi’s perspective.

Ruth 1

The plight of Naomi: This meditation is taken from the Book of Ruth and is written from Naomi’s perspective as she sets out to return to Bethlehem after the death of her husband and her two sons. Life can deal all of us such terrible blows but rather than trying to sort it all out by ourselves we should trust in the Lord and not our own judgement.

Ruth 2

The arrival of Naomi and Ruth in Bethlehem: This meditation is taken from the Book of Ruth and is written from Naomi’s perspective as she reflects back to the events that brought her and Ruth to Bethlehem. It considers how she can see God’s hand working within her life, and that of her daughter-in-law, and therefore how she can trust in the Lord with all her heart and mind.

Ruth 3

Ruth works in the field of Boaz. This meditation is taken from the Book of Ruth and is taken from Ruth’s perspective as she tries to find a way to provide for her and Naomi in a foreign land. The generosity of Boaz provides Ruth with nourishment, refreshment and protection and reflects a little of the abundant generosity and providence that God wishes to pour out on us.

Ruth 4

Ruth goes to Boaz. This meditation is taken from the Book of Ruth and is taken from Ruth’s perspective as she goes to Boaz to ask him to fulfil the law regarding Levirate marriage. Ruth is learning more and more about the culture and faith of Naomi and that God has a plan for her - God has a plan for you too.

Ruth 5

Boaz marries Ruth. This meditation is taken from the Book of Ruth and is taken from Ruth’s perspective as she waits to hear the outcome of whom she shall marry. Sometimes waiting to hear an answer to prayer may seem unbearably long but if we believe in God who only wants the best for us, and is working his purposes out through us, then we must trust in his timing and his will.
